Background: Ben Carlin was an Australian adventurer and engineer who is famous for completing a remarkable journey in a modified amphibious vehicle—a Jeep. Carlin spent several years modifying the Ford GPA for his global adventure, making it more seaworthy by adding a rudder, larger fuel tanks, and other improvements.
Over the course of 10 years, Carlin completed the circumnavigation. His journey took him across the Atlantic, through Europe, Asia, and eventually back across the Pacific. He finished his historic expedition in 1958, returning to Montreal, having traveled over 17,000 kilometers (about 11,000 miles) by sea and 62,000 kilometers (about 39,000 miles) by land.
